Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome

TENS or Toxic Epidermal Necrolsysis syndrome is also known as Lyell's Syndrome. It is a more severe form of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS).  This is a debilitating skin condition which can be caused by side effects of several different medications.

TENS causes the top layer of skin to detach from the lower layers throughout the body.  Common symptoms include:

  • Blisters in the mouth, ears, eyes, nose or genital area
  • Blisters, rash or red spots on the skin
  • Eyelids swelling
  • Flu –like symptoms including fever

Toxic Epidermal Necroslysis is clinically diagnosed when greater than 30% of the body is covered in skin lesions.  People suffering from SJS and TENS can seek help at the Burn Care Centers across the country.
