Stevens Johnson Syndrome Settlement & Compensation
Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare inflammatory skin disorder that can be fatal. The disorder causes lesions in the mouth, eyes, and on the body. It can also spread to the internal organs. Although the majority of cases occur in people between the ages of 20 and 40, SJS can occur at any age.
Permanent skin damage and scarring can occur. Lesions and blisters that occur internally on organs can cause serious inflammation of the lungs, heart, and kidneys. Up to 27 percent of those afflicted with Stevens Johnson Syndrome or related illnesses incur long- term eye damage or vision loss. As many as 15 percent of those who develop the syndrome will die from the condition.
Settlement of many cases of SJS
Most Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuits are confidentially settled for what is believed to be large sums of money. One well known settlement revolves around Bextra. In April 2005, the FDA asked Pfizer, the manufacturer of Bextra, to remove Bextra from the market. In October 2008, Pfizer reached an $894 million deal to settle most lawsuits related to risk of heart attack and strokes over its withdrawn pain reliever Bextra.
Throughout the United States lawsuits for SJS victims have been brought and settled against such companies as against Pfizer, G. D. Searle, Pharmacia, McNeil, and Johnson & Johnson for drugs such as Children's Motrin, Daypro, and Bextra.
Recently an 82 year-old woman was awarded $6 million in an SJS Lawsuit in California by a jury. The 82 year-old Chinese female immigrant suffered Stevens Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS/TENS) after being prescribed Allopurinol for gout. As a result of the significant injuries she suffered due to the disease, she was left depending on others for her activities of daily living. The verdict is a record in California Courts for an SJS/TEN case.
