SJS-Related Drugs

Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a rare inflammatory skin disorder that can be fatal, often causes lesions in the mouth, eyes, on the body, and on internal organs. Although the majority of cases occur in people between the ages of 20 and 40, SJS can occur at any age.

Permanent skin damage and scarring can occur. Lesions and blisters that occur internally on organs can cause serious inflammation of the lungs, heart, and kidneys. Up to 27 percent of those afflicted with SJS or related illnesses incur long- term eye damage or vision loss. As many as 15 percent of those who develop the syndrome will die from the condition.

Drugs side effects include Stevens Johnson Syndrome

SJS can be caused by allergic reaction to drugs. Some of the well-known drugs that have been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome include the following:

  • Celebrex: Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a known side effect of taking Celebrex
  • Ibuprofen: Stevens Johnson Syndrome is known to be caused by taking Ibuprofen
  • Wellbutrin: Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a side effect of Wellbutrin
  • Daypro:Stevens Johnson Syndrome is known to be associated with the taking of Daypro

Although it is a somewhat rare condition, Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a frightening and extremely serious syndrome. The condition can rapidly progress from widespread rash, to blisters and lesions across the body resembling second-degree burns. The reaction spreads throughout the body via the skin and/or mucous membranes, including internally where it affects the organs.

Cardiovascular side effects, including increased risk of heart attack or stroke, have been linked to Celebrex and other COX-2 inhibitors. Blood clots in the arteries can increase.

Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs have recently been recognized by the scientific community to be one of the leading causes of SJS. Ibuprofen can cause serious skin adverse events such as exfoliative dermatitis. These serious events may occur without warning.

Daypro, which is known generically as oxaprozin, is another pain relieving NSAID known to be associated with Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Daypro stays in the blood stream for a long period of time which gives it more time to cause potential toxic side effects.

The anti-depressant Wellbutrin is linked to SJS, causing blisters in the eyes and mouth.
