Feldene Stevens Johnson Syndrome

Feldene is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is effective in treating fever, pain, and inflammation in the body. Like other NSAIDs, Feldene is used for the treatment of inflammation and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Feldene is the brand name for the drug piroxicam and it has been marketed since 1982. Feldene as well as Daypro and Bextra have been linked with Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) as have many other NSAIDs including Ibuprofen. Sulfa-based antibiotics, some seizure medications, and many other drugs have also been associated with SJS.

In spite of the linking to SJS, there is no adequate warning by the manufacturer as to the possibility of developing Feldene Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

SJS cause may be an allergic response

While the cause of Stevens Johnson Syndrome is not always clear, it is usually a specific type of allergic reaction that occurs in response to medication or infection. SJS requires hospitalization and can lead to death. Recovery from Stevens Johnson syndrome can take several weeks to several months.

SJS can cause severe conjunctivitis, iritis, an inflammation inside the eye, corneal blisters and erosions, and corneal holes. The allergic reaction to the drug may not occur until 7-14 days after the first dose.

Feldene/Piroxicam has had deaths associated with toxic skin reactions. In addition there have been a number of reports to the FDA of Feldene Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
