Advil & Stevens Johnson Syndrome
Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a serious and potentially deadly skin condition that can be caused in a number of ways, most commonly through an allergic reaction to the use of some medications. The symptoms can cause extreme pain and discomfort, and can be fatal.
SJS can start with non-specific symptoms such as cough, aching, headaches, and feverishness. The condition can rapidly progress from widespread rash on the face and trunk of the body, to blisters and lesions across the body resembling second-degree burns. The reaction spreads throughout the body via the skin and/or mucous membranes, including internally where it affects the organs.
SJS & Advil
In children, medication can play a big part in causing SJS. Medication for children associated with Stevens Johnson Syndrome include ibuprofen-based medications such as Advil and children’s Motrin. There is a concern that SJS induced by children’s Advil or Motrin can cause a rapid onset of blindness or death.
Large drug manufacturers, such as those who manufacture Advil are being urged to add warnings to packaging about the possible side effects of this medication. Concerned parents are now expressing concerns over what they once classed as a safe, effective painkiller and The Food and Drug Administration is also being asked to look into this matter further.
